Welcome to my web site!
My name is Ellen DePasquale, a.k.a. "Home Office Mom." I have been a freelance writer and work-at-home mom for almost eight years. I have decided to share my experiences with other moms so that they can be better prepared for the road ahead.
My online exclusive series "The Truth About Working at Home with Kids" is updated monthly and my list of "Useful Sites" is always growing, so come back often for the most up-to-date information..
The Truth About Working at Home with Kids -- Part Two: What Business Should You Start?
Part One in October discussed some of the pros and cons to working at home, but most of us go ahead with it anyway! So now that you have decided to work at home to be with your children, what business is the right business?
The answer to that question is different for everyone. Since you have the "luxury" of working at home, and selecting your business, think hard about what you like to do. For example, are you a fast typist, or can you make great creations with your hands? Take the time to really think about what you can do well, and then think about how to turn that talent into a business.
Another important consideration is how much money you can afford to spend to get the business up and running. If you have a healthy bankroll and are interested in a franchise, then just shop around until you find onne that interests you. However, if you are on a tight budget, which is the situation for the majority of us (including me in the beginning), then you will need to be a bit creative by combining your talents with low-cost materials.
Before you finalize your decision, don't forget the kids! Do you have the room to keep supplies out of reach? Are your kids really loud when they play so that speaking on the phone would be difficult? Do you have the room to set-up a seperate office that can have boundaries, and possibly doors?
As a freelance writer I conduct interviews over the telephone while my twins sleep in the afternoon and my son is at school. I do most of my writing in the evenings after everyone (sometimes including my husband) are in bed for the night. My home is not condusive to a product-oriented business because my girls get into everything!
For some additional real world examples take a look at the WAHM web ring listing at the bottom of my site. This listing includes many different types of businesses being run by work-at-home moms.
Whatever business you decide to start, make sure you have the passion and talent to be successful. You are working from home in an effort to be with your children, bring in some additional income and to be happy. Just like a bad marriage, and bad business choice will make you miserable -- which defeats the whole point!
